Journalism is a very essential element of democracy. There are countries which fail to function simple because journalism is inexistent. This happens when the leader is coercing the people not to make any news against him or her. There are countries in the world with totalitarian regime. Totalitarian regime means totalitarianism form of government. The government is controlled by one person or one party and people cannot subvert the government or else they will die. Countries with this kind of government could mostly be seen in Africa. Africa is perhaps the most dangerous places on earth. It is so dangerous because leaders themselves are the ones killing his or her people. The citizens have no way of retaliating against the leaders whose policies are to exterminate its citizens and to get rich. There are also societies in conflict today. These societies could mostly be found in Middle East where democracy is dead and journalism is unknown. Well, to be fair, maybe there are newspapers and information campaign drives in Middle East but these campaigns are mostly for the benefit of the leaders of the country. It is pretty dangerous for journalists all over the world to just publish things without thinking of the fringe harms that it could do to the people involved. Some journalists lose not just their jobs but their families as well. It is really scary when the regime is targeting not just your job, through bombing your station, etc but also when it targets the reporter's loved ones. It is of great importance that these journalists be able to protect themselves at all costs at all time. There is what we call responsible journalism. Responsible journalism is an accumulation of the actions of a democratic journalist institution. This happens when the people in the media know their responsibilities and the people in the society are appreciating the responsibilities done by people in the media. The major responsibility of these people is simply to disseminate news without biases. It is the healthiest ways to make a democracy a better government. There are those who work for non profit newsletter especially in third world countries. The non profit newsletter is a form of communication in which people are informed for free.
